University of Canberra Agreement

In November 2018, the Copyright Agency opened proceedings with the Copyright Court against all Australian universities to determine the amount to be paid by universities in respect of copying the legal licence. The proceedings were initiated when the parties failed to negotiate an agreement on administrative arrangements and royalties payable prior to the termination of the previous agreement between Universities Australia and the Copyright Agency in December 2018. The university pays a significant amount each year to debt collection agencies to take advantage of the copying facilities available through licenses and agreements. Agencies use these funds to compensate authors and copyright holders for the use of their material. The University participates in regular sampling exercises to help determine the total amount of remuneration and information on copyright holders to be remunerated. The University is a party to a number of licenses and legal agreements that allow the use of copyrighted material by members of the University. Details of these licenses and agreements are included in the Copyright Guide. Licenses and agreements are managed by the Copyright Commissioner.
